What Makes a Great Insurance Agent?

When you are shopping for any type of insurance, you are going to want the help and advice of someone who understands the insurance business and who is truly interested in helping you protect yourself rather than making the most money. Unfortunately some insurance agents are in the business for their own benefit and will not tell you when you are paying too much or are buying insurance that you simply don't need. I am a former insurance agent, and I have seen the best and worst. This blog is about noticing red flags when it comes to sneaky insurance sales people and about finding the signs of a truly good agent.

Tips For Choosing A Homeowner's Insurance Agency

Whether you are buying your first home or thinking about changing your homeowner's insurance company, you want to be sure to get the best coverage and service for your money. You probably see dozens of ads and receive many emails about the benefits of different companies. However, before you jump into a relationship with any specific agency, consider the following tips.

Independent Agent vs Insurance Company

An independent insurance agent does not work for any specific company. This means the agent can sell policies from a number of different insurance companies and help you find the one that fits your needs best. However, independent agents are actually a "middle man" this means that you may be able to get a better price by going to the company directly. In addition, this means that anytime you need to make a claim and go to your agent, he or she has to go through the company before you get paid. Company policies generally pay out much faster.

Discounts

Do not be afraid to ask what discounts they offer. This is regardless of whether you go with an independent agent or ca company. Ask about bundles, purchasing more than just the one type of insurance, such as auto, life or medical with them for a better price. If they do offer bundles, ask about things like good driver discount, or a break in price if you have not had any claims on your homeowner's policy in a number of years. Some companies also offer discounts to different groups of people. This could include seniors, civil service workers, members of different associations (such as the Small Business Association or Lion's Club members), veterans, or even different professional groups.

Service

Do some research on the company and/or agent. The internet provides a number of ways to find out if they pay on claims quickly and how customer problems are handled. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau in your city to see if there have been any complaints.

If you own a home, you definitely need to have insurance to protect your investment, even if it is paid completely and the lender does not demand you carry coverage. However, there are many different companies, agents, and options for the coverage you need. Do not just assume the company you buy your auto insurance will be best for your home coverage. Get quotes and actually meet with a few different agents, some company agents and some independent before you buy your policy.
